The Clarets are set to make the long trip up north on Saturday 14th January to play Vanarama National League side York City in the Isuzu FA Trophy 4th Round with a place in the last 16 of the competition up for grabs. (KO 3pm)

The Opposition

York City sit in 14th place having played 26 games in the Vanarama National League this season. They have won 8, drawn 8, and lost 10, scoring 32 goals and conceding 30 in the league campaign so far which all adds up to 32 league points.

York have had an up and down season in the league, a strong late August and early September saw them pick up 11 out of a possible 15 points but then a poor run of form ensued in October and November when they went 9 games in all competitions without a win which cost previous manager John Askey his position. However, since then, they have only 1 loss in their last 5 games. It is their first season back in the National League since 2016-17 after promotion last season from the National League North when they beat Boston United in the playoff final.

York also have an excellent recent record in the FA Trophy, winning the competition in 2012 and 2017 and reaching the semi-finals last season before losing to eventual winners Bromley, who fielded current Claret Liam Trotter in that game.

In terms of players, York have former Colchester keeper Ethan Ross, between the sticks, who is on loan from League Two Stockport County. In defence they have former Harrogate fullback Ryan Fallowfield as well as experienced former Motherwell and Chesterfield centre-half Fraser Kerr.

In midfield areas they have brought in Paddy McLaughlin on loan from Kidderminster who is in his 3rd spell with the club having been part of the team that won the Trophy in 2012 and the same season won the Conference playoffs. They also have former Dunfermline midfielder Dan Pybus who has just signed a new contract this week.

In attacking areas they have signed two talented youngsters on loan. Shaq Forde on loan from Watford, fresh off a hat-trick against Maidstone last weekend and also Ollie Tanner on loan from Cardiff who was subject of a bid from Spurs last season when he was at Lewes. They also have experienced striker Lenell John-Lewis who counts Grimsby, Shrewsbury and Newport amongst his former clubs. A target man up front for them will be Dutch striker Manny Duku who was in the National League South last season with Havant but has also played in the Football League and in Scotland.

York City’s manager is 42 year old David Webb. Webb is in his first senior management role and only took over in early December from John Askey. Webb never played professional football but has been a highly regarded academy coach working at Crystal Palace, Tottenham, Southampton. He has also been Technical Director in Sweden with Ostersund and his most recent role before York was Head of Football Operations at Huddersfield.

Team News

Chelmsford City gave a number of senior players a rest in the Essex Senior Cup win over Coggeshall so manager Robbie Simpson should have a number of options to choose from.

One player definitely absent will be Arjanit Krasniqi who is cup-tied having played for Dover earlier in the competition but striker Reece Grant is now available for the rest of the tournament.
