New Writtle Street Redevelopment

Stadium plans for the pitching deck published in 1964 by Chelmsford City FC for election to the Football League.

With a total cost of £1,250,000 the development at New Writtle Street included a ten-pin bowling alley, 400 seater restaurant, Olympic-size swimming pool, paddling pool, dance hall, gym, squash courts, office, changing rooms and car parking.

Football League Election Brochure 1964

Before promotion and relegation there was a vote by the Football League on teams that could be “elected”.

This is a 16 page brochure on the merits of why Chelmsford City FC should be granted  Football League status. 

A very interesting read – back then we averaged 5,100 per game.

Eddie Dillsworth

Born in Sierra Leone, Eddie was signed by Wealdstone in 1964 from Fulham and remained with the club for 3 years before enjoying a highly successful semi-professional career at Chelmsford City. Joining in 1967.
