Chelmsford City V Farnborough, National League South, EMJ Community Stadium, Saturday 19th October 2024, 3pm kick-off.

Chelmsford City welcome National League South leaders Farnborough to Essex this weekend.

The Clarets fell to defeat last Saturday against Barnet in the FA Cup fourth round qualifying but remain unbeaten in the league since late August, and will be able to move within four points of Spencer Day’s table-topping side with a win this weekend.

Boro were defeated in the FA Cup at the second round qualifying stage and therefore took part in one of the six National League South fixtures that were played last weekend. Day’s men recorded a 4-1 home win over Enfield Town and registered their seventh league victory of the 24-25 campaign, extending a National League South unbeaten run of their own which stretches back to early September.

Here’s all that Clarets supporters need to know ahead of a game between two of the division’s form teams…

Team & match stats:

  • Chelmsford City are unbeaten at the EMJ Community Stadium in the league so far this season (P5, W2, D3).
  • Only one of the seven National League South wins which Spencer Day’s side have recorded this season has come away from home. Boro have picked up four points on the road in 24-25, only Weymouth and Enfield Town (3) and Aveley and Welling United (1) have taken less away points.
  • City are unbeaten in their last seven clashes against Farnborough (W6, D1).
  • Boro’s last National League South win over the Clarets came in a 2-0 victory at the Saunders Transport Community Stadium back in October 2013.

Opposition:

Farnborough have enjoyed an impressive start to the 2024-25 National League South campaign. Saturday’s opponents ended their second year back in the second tier of Non-League football strongly and won 9 of their final 11 league fixtures last season, but narrowly missed out on the chance to be promoted when they finished the campaign sitting 8th in the table and one point shy of a play-off place. Form-wise, Spencer Day’s side have picked up where they left off last season and have won seven of their opening eleven league games since the 24-25 campaign kicked off in August, earning themselves the accolade of being league leaders ahead of this weekend’s game.

A key member of Day’s squad continues to be former Claret Ricky Holmes. Despite now being 37 years old, Holmes has showed as of late that he’s still got it, with his goal and assist in Farnborugh’s 3-1 win over Salisbury in September earning him a spot in the National League South Team of the Week. Holmes has scored four goals so far this season, building on the tally of six strikes which he registered in the 23-24 campaign.

Boro duo Richard Chin and Millar Matthews-Lewis have also caught the eye of late and have earned themselves recognition in the form of being included in the National League South Team of the Week during the last month. Charlton Athletic academy graduate Chin arrived at the Saunders Transport Community Stadium in August after Boro fended off National League competition for the versatile 22-year-old’s signature. Chin has scored four goals in nine National League South appearances this season, and is second in Farnborough’s goalscoring charts to Matthews-Lewis. Luton Town academy graduate Matthews-Lewis completed a permanent move to Farnborough in July and comes into this weekend’s game in impressive form, having scored four goals in his last three appearances.

Team News:

Cameron James made his first competitive appearance of the season during last week’s defeat at Barnet, and will now be pushing to make his first start as Chelmsford City club captain.

Arthur Penney will begin a suspension after being shown a red card during the FA Cup game at the Hive London.

Geofrey Okonkwo is continuing to progress in his recovery from a knee injury. Ryan Blackman is set to remain absent.
