RIP VIC GOMERSALL
The Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former captain Vic Gomersall.
Signed from Swansea Town, now Swansea City, in the summer of 1971 Vic, a left back, captained the City side to a memorable Southern League championship in his first season with the Club. He was an ever present in all 42 league games that season and played in 61 of the 62 competitive games that were played.
In all he spent four seasons at New Writtle Street during which time he made a total of 197 appearances scoring 4 goals. He also took on the role of City’s Commercial Manager working alongside another player Ron Fogg and with Jim Page ran the Bingo Hall in Billericay that the Club owned.
In 1975 he suffered a ruptured thigh muscle that brought his playing career to an end and ironically he was released by the then City Manager Bill Leivers who had been a team mate at his first club Manchester City.
After leaving City he returned to Wales and took on the role of Commercial Manager at Swansea City and his 12 year spell there saw them rise from the Fourth Division to the First Division. After leaving Vetch Field he took on a similar role at Llanelli.
The Club sends its condolences to Vic’s family and friends at this sad time.
