Boreham Wood v Chelmsford City, National League South, Mangata Pay UK Stadium Meadow Park, Tuesday 25th February 2025, 7:45pm kick-off.

Chelmsford City travel to Boreham Wood on Tuesday night in search of a third consecutive victory in the National League South.

The Clarets have secured wins against Salisbury and Torquay United in their previous two league games, and ahead of the club’s first visit to Meadow Park in over 10 years, manager Robbie Simpson stated that his side will be going “hell for leather” to claim all three points for the third match in a row.

Luke Garrard’s Boreham Wood team come into the match after a solid response to a recent tough run of four losses, having also won their last two matches. As a result, Tuesday’s hosts are too targeting a third consecutive win.

Here’s everything Clarets supporters need to know ahead of the game…

Team and match stats:

  • Boreham Wood have conceded 13 league goals at Meadow Park this season – only Torquay United (12 goals conceded) have a better defensive record at home.
  • At the other end of the pitch, Boreham Wood have the second-highest home goal tally in the National League South this season. Only Hemel Hempstead Town (38) have scored more than the 36 goals netted by Garrard’s men in home games.
  • Chelmsford City have come away winless from their last three visits to Boreham Wood. The club’s most recent victory at Meadow Park came in a 3-1 triumph during the 2011-12 season.

Opposition:

Boreham Wood manager Luke Garrard has guided his side firmly into the promotion race since making an unexpected return to the club in September. Garrard originally left Meadow Park following his side’s relegation from the National League in April, but quickly returned to replace Ross Jenkins, whose tenure as the Wood’s manager only lasted only 121 days.

Since his return, Garrard has achieved a 58% win ratio in the National League South, losing just five of the 24 league games which he has overseen during his second stint in charge of the club. Four of those losses have come in the past month, but the Wood have bounced back recently with two straight wins. Forward Kwesi Appiah has been pivotal in these victories, scoring three goals in these games to take his league tally for the season to 20, making him the division’s top scorer.

These recent victories against Eastbourne Borough and St Albans City, the form of Appiah, plus a positive squad update from chairman Danny Hunter, should leave the Wood Army feeling good ahead of Tuesday’s clash. Possible returns to the pitch for former City man Chris Bush, as well as full back Josh Hare, will strengthen Garrard’s options in the defensive third and boost his side in their mission to close the five point gap between them and current table toppers Dorking Wanderers.

Team news:

Robbie Simpson confirmed in his programme notes ahead of Saturday’s game against Torquay United that forward Saleem Akanbi is around a week away from returning from an ankle injury. Freddie Hockey is approximately a week behind Akanbi in his recovery. Club captain Cameron James, who sustained a knee injury earlier this month at Eastbourne Borough, has had a scan. However, Simpson did not set a timescale for James’ return.
