Maldon & Tiptree v Chelmsford City, Pre-Season Friendly, Drewitt-Barlow Stadium, Tuesday 15th July 2025, 7:45pm kick-off.

Chelmsford City are continuing to ramp up their preparations for the 2025/26 Enterprise National League South season, with fellow Essex side Maldon & Tiptree the first of two teams Angelo Harrop’s men are set to face during their third week of pre-season.

Following Saturday’s outing against QPR, Harrop said he expects his first-team players to begin playing 60 minutes or more in his side’s six remaining friendlies, starting this week against the Jammers and then Brackley Town.

Isthmian League North Division outfit Maldon & Tiptree will provide the Clarets’ new-look squad with a formidable test as they look to get further minutes in their legs; Kevin Horlock’s squad boasts a range of players with National League South experience or higher.

Here’s all that Clarets fans need to know ahead of the game…

Opposition:

Maldon & Tiptree supporters will be hoping their pre-season optimism is not short-lived, and that the 2025/26 campaign will mark the beginning of the club’s rise up the football pyramid.

After ending last season in mid-table in the Isthmian League North Division, the club’s ambitious new owners have made a host of high-profile signings as they look to push for promotion to Step Three.

Former Chelmsford City captain Cameron James, who departed the club following the end of last season, has made the move to the Drewitt-Barlow Stadium this summer alongside midfielder Louie Dunne, who made a handful of appearances in a City shirt in 24/25 before moving to Dartford on loan.

James and Dunne join a squad already featuring two more of their former teammates: experienced midfielder Anthony Wordsworth, who joined the Jammers last season after wearing Claret during the club’s record-breaking 2023/24 campaign, and defender Matt Yates, who had a brief spell at Chelmsford City last season. Yates re-joined Maldon earlier this year and has been a regular in a red and blue shirt since his return.

Kevin Horlock’s side kicked off their pre-season campaign at the weekend with a friendly against Colchester United’s first-team. The Jammers fell to a 3-0 defeat but enjoyed an important opening pre-season runout.

Team news:

Joe Grimwood and Taylor Clark were the only two first-team players who featured for more than 45 minutes last time out against QPR. This time around, more players can expect to feature for longer after Harrop promised to get more minutes in his players’ legs as pre-season continues to progress.
