Canvey Island V Chelmsford City, BBC Essex Senior Cup Semi Final, The Steves Taxi’s Stadium, Tuesday 18th February 2025, 7:45pm kick-off.
Isthmian League Premier Division outfit Canvey Island stand between Chelmsford City and a chance at BBC Essex Senior Cup glory.
Robbie Simpson’s side have overcome West Essex and Billericay Town in the earlier rounds of the Essex Senior Cup, before beating Waltham Abbey in December to advance to the semi-final stage of the competition.
Should they win at the Steves Taxi’s Stadium on Tuesday night, City will reach the final of the Essex Senior Cup for the first time since 2019.
Here’s all that Clarets supporters need to know ahead of the game…
Team & match stats:
- City last won the Essex Senior Cup in 2016-17.
- Tuesday’s match will be the first competitive clash between Canvey Island and Chelmsford City in more than 20 years. The sides met in 2004 in an Essex Thameside Trophy tie, which the Clarets won 2-1.

Opposition:
Step 3 side Canvey Island are looking to end the 2024-25 season by securing their league status and silverware.
Brad Wellmen’s side come into Tuesday’s tie on the back of a disappointing 4-0 home defeat to relegation strugglers Bognor Regis Town. The loss has left the Gulls languishing five points above the Isthmian League Premier Division drop zone.
However, a midweek semi-final provides Canvey with an opportunity to switch their focus to reaching the final of the Essex Senior Cup for the first time since 2011-12. The Gulls overcame Colchester United to lift the trophy that year.
Wellmen’s men have beaten Maldon & Tiptree, Buckhurst Hill, Dagenham & Redbridge and Brightlingsea Regent to set up Tuesday’s clash against the Clarets.
Competition rules:
If Tuesday’s game at The Steves Taxi’s Stadium remains level after 90 minutes, then the tie will be decided by a penalty shootout. Extra time is not played in any round of the Essex Senior Cup.
Robbie Simpson is allowed to name five substitutes on the bench in this competition, and the manager can introduce all five substitutes if he wishes to do so.

Team news:
Jazzi Barnum-Bobb and Frankie Edwards are both cup-tied for Tuesday night’s tie.
Cameron James, Saleem Akanbi and Freddie Hockey all look set to remain sidelined.

Supporters travelling by car to Tuesday’s game should know that the journey from the EMJ Community Stadium to Steves Taxi’s Stadium takes around 30 minutes.
