Full time: Aveley 1-2 Chelmsford City.
The Clarets earned a deserved win at Parkside on Monday night against second-placed Aveley, with a Chelmsford goal in each half from Freddie Hockey and Ody Alfa helping City take three points back to the Melbourne Community Stadium The highlight of a quiet opening to proceedings at Parkside came in the 9th minute. Aveley winger Sydney Ibie’s powerful shot hit the sidenetting and broke the goal, forcing a pause in play whilst repairs were made to the netting. Once the game resumed, it was the Clarets who eventually established a foothold in the match following some encouraging spells of possession. Simpson’s side were rewarded for this positive play in the 34th minute, when Ody Alfa’s good work down the left side culminated in him picking out the lively Freddie Hockey, who moved behind the Millers’ defence. The Clarets’ no.19 made no mistake having received the ball in a dangerous position, as he slid his effort underneath Aveley keeper Jonathan North and into the net to put his team ahead. Alfa continued to cause Scopes’ men problems, and he deservedly found the net in the 65th minute to double City’s lead. Jermaine Francis and Finley Barbrook combined well down the right-hand-side, with Ipswich loanee Barbrook delivering a superb low cross, which Alfa turned in at the back post. The Clarets suffered a scare in the 75th minute, when Aveley halved the deficit after Siju Odelusi’s deflected effort from the edge of the box evaded Oluwayemi, trickling into the bottom corner of the Chelmsford goal. City managed the remainder of the game well though, with the Clarets backline led by the returning Dave Winfield calmly dealing with a barrage of Aveley long throw-ins late on. A second away win on the bounce has extended the club’s unbeaten league run to eight games, ahead of Saturday’s FA Trophy clash against Harborough.
