Chelmsford City are delighted to announce that defender, Luke Jenkins has agreed a deal with the Clarets ahead of the 2023/24 Season
Jenkins, 20, departed AFC Wimbledon at the end of the 2022/23 Season and now links up with Robbie Simpson’s side having impressed during a period on trial with the Clarets over Pre-Season. Luke brings Vanarama National South experience having had loan spells with Tonbridge Angels in 2021/22 as well as a couple of short spells in the league in 2022/23 with Weymouth and two spells with Hampton and Richmond Borough. Luke came through the Academy with AFC Wimbledon and was involved with the First Team at the end of 2022/23 making 3 appearances scoring one.
Manager Robbie Simpson shared his thoughts on the new man “I think it was a bit of a surprise that Luke wasn’t offered a new deal at Wimbledon, he played the last few games of the Season for them and scored a goal on his debut. He’s got good, recent pedigree having played a few games in League Two just a few months ago and performed really well.”
“One of my former teammates played against him for Salford in one of those games and really gave him a good recommendation when I asked him about Luke. We’ve spoken to Johnnie Jackson at Wimbledon and Weymouth and Hampton where he was on loan last year. We’re delighted to bring in Luke after he’s been training with us for the last few weeks since the start of Pre-Season.”
“He’s performed really well both in training and in the games and I think most importantly he’s shown a desire to want to play for the football club and that’s really stood out. He’s had other offers from teams in our league, quite lucrative ones and one club even offered him the Captaincy. You can see he’s sacrificed a lot and turned down a lot because he really wants to play for Chelmsford City Football Club. That played a huge part in us wanting him as well as his ability on the pitch which I think he’s shown in the first few Pre-Season games. We’re delighted to bring Luke on board and hope he hits the ground running.”
