The Club is saddened to learn of the passing of former player Terry Hayward.

Born in Ilford on 28th September 1934 Terry signed for his local club West Ham United but only made one first team appearance for the Hammers. Ironically this was at New Writtle Street on 2nd May 1958 as Chelmsford beat West Ham 5-1 in the final of the Essex Professional Cup.

Released by the Hammers in the summer of 1959 he was brough to City by Harry Ferrier and went on to make 160 first team appearances until his release in 1963. In addition Terry, a full back, made 11 appearances for the Club’s Reserves. He scored three goals for the first team during his time with the Club.

He played in both legs of the Southern League Cup Final in his first season with the Club as City beat Worcester City 4-2 on aggregate. He was also in the side as City three times reached the competition proper of the F.A. Cup losing to Crystal Palace, Port Vale and King’s Lynn, each time in the first round.

His final appearance for City came on Saturday 4th May 1963 in a 3-0 Southern League home win against Bath City. After leaving City he signed for Clacton Town.

The Club sends its condolences to his family and friends at this sad time.
