Chelmsford City is pleased to announce that a loan has been agreed with Southend United for Matt Rush.

The 20-year-old joins the Clarets having made nine Vanarama National League appearances for his parent club this term.

Rush also has Football League experience, having featured in Sky Bet League One and Two for the Shrimpers.

During the 2019/20 term, the forward made seven League One appearances for his Roots Hall club before making seven in League Two the following year.

Over those games in the fourth tier of English football Rush scored once, bagging in a 2-1 victory over Leyton Orient at Roots Hall.

Speaking on the arrival of the forward, City Manager Robbie Simpson explained: “With Hady departing to go back to Charlton, we were looking to bring in another forward-type option.

“Whether that be another striker but also have the flexibility to play as an advanced midfield player as well.

“We’ve been on the search for that for quite a while and it just so happened that Matt became available from Southend.

“We’ve had great reports on him in the past, Spills and I both know players at Southend that really rate him highly. We’ve spoken to the coaches there and his agent about where he’s at.

“He was Southend’s top goalscorer in pre-season and for a number of different reasons he just hasn’t been able to get his chance in the team for them.

“They’ve picked up recently with results and are on a good run, so it doesn’t look like he’s going to get much playing time soon with them.

“He works ever so hard and he’s a really good finisher, so in terms of what we’re looking for, that really suits the bill.

“He’s a lovely lad with a great attitude, so again fits in with our whole ethos and we can’t wait to welcome him to the Club and for him to put on that claret shirt.

“Hopefully he can chip in with some goals and some much-needed competition for places to drive performances and he just gives us more options in general, which is what we need as we’re looking to kick on.”

A full interview with the young striker will follow on ClaretsTV over the coming days.

Welcome to Chelmsford, Matt!
