Chelmsford City is delighted to announce that forward Samson Esan has joined on an initial 28 day loan from Vanarama National League side Maidenhead United.

Samson, 24, who can play in the number 10 role, out wide or as a central striker, joined Maidenhead in February 2022 from Isthmian Premier outfit Potters Bar Town but spent the rest of the 2021-22 season back on loan at the Scholars. Esan made his Maidenhead debut back in September 2022 when he started in the 1-0 win over Woking.

Samson was Potters Bar’s top scorer in the 2021-22 season with 12 goals from 27 appearances, which included braces against Lewes and Leatherhead. He also scored in Potters Bar’s 3-1 defeat against Braintree in last season’s FA Trophy. Prior to playing at Potters Bar, Samson played at Enfield Town and was a youngster at Norwich City.

Chelmsford City manager Robbie Simpson commented, “Obviously with the departure of Charlie Ruff, we were quick to put together a succession plan. Adam Drew (Chelmsford City’s Head of Recruitment) was quick to put a list together and one of those names on that list was Samson Esan. He stood out for me because a year ago Luke Owers brought him to our attention and we watched a couple of games where he played for Potters Bar, playing alongside Devonte Aransibia, and he stood out for them. I remember watching the game when he scored against Braintree.

We made an approach last season but he ended up signing for Maidenhead. He’s got experience at the level below us and now’s he’s played for Maidenhead at the level above. Maidenhead rate him highly but they are very strong in that area of the pitch so they want him to go out on loan to continue his development. We were quick to pursue him and get the deal over the line. I’m delighted to welcome Samson into the group and hopefully he can hit the ground running for us.”

All at Chelmsford City wish Samson the best of luck in his time with the Clarets!
