Chelmsford City Football Club are delighted to announce that Midifelder, Anthony Wordsworth has joined the club
The 34-Year-Old joins the Clarets boasting a plethora of experience in football having amassed close to 400 Career Appearances. Having come through the academy at Colchester United, Wordsworth went on to make around 200 appearances for the U’s before signing for Ipswich Town. His time at Ipswich saw two loan spells to Crawley Town and Rotherham United before making an Essex return to sign for Southend United. He switched Essex for London in a move that saw him join AFC Wimbledon before moving to Barnet FC. A switch to the Republic of Ireland saw Wordsworth sign for League of Ireland Premier Division side Waterford. On his return to England, Wordsworth had a short spell with Cheshunt before joining Enfield Town to aid them in their push for promotion.
Manager Robbie Simpson spoke on signing Wordsworth “Obviously with Liam Trotter retiring and being such a key player for us last season, we really wanted to try and get experience and leadership in the middle of the pitch. We wanted Football League experience as well and he [Anthony] brings a wealth of that. He’s a fantastic footballer, he’s a good size and he’s a great character to have in any dressing room, we are absolutely delighted to sign him and bring him to the Clarets as he’s going to bring a lot to us.”
“He’s most recently been out at Waterford in Ireland and we actually had a conversation, after his first season out in Ireland, to try and bring him to the Football Club but he ended up doing another year in Ireland with Waterford. Last season, he ended up carrying on playing football for Enfield Town because he knew people there and they were trying to get in the Play-Offs. They took him in and he played a good number of games for them. He picked up an injury towards the back end of the season and I’m fairly certain if it wasn’t for that, they would have made the Play-Offs. He’s had a taste of Non-League Football in England and that will help with his adaptability to the level.”
“I can’t wait to see him and get him in and amongst the lads because he’s going to have a great influence on and off the pitch towards our success next year.”
We Welcome Anthony to the club and look forward to seeing him join up with the squad for Pre-Season.
