Ruff made 20 appearances scoring 7 goals for the Clarets in the 2022/23 Season after joining from Hornchurch in July 2022. The 23-year-old departed for Havant and Waterlooville in November 2022 where he went on to score 5 goals in 23 National League South Appearances for the Hawks. Following the end of the 2022/23 Season, Ruff departed Havant and Waterlooville and has now re-joined the Clarets ahead of the 2023/24 Season!

Manager Robbie Simpson shared his thoughts on bringing Charlie Ruff back to the Melbourne Community Stadium “We are absolutely delighted to get Ruffy back, he was obviously a favourite of ours and the fans during his time here. He did ever so well, the progression in his game in such a short space of time was evident and obviously, we were disappointed at the time that he decided to leave. Obviously, there were reasons that we understood, probably there was one bit of learning for Charlie in that he didn’t play that last game for us before he left. Maybe that was a bit of learning there for Charlie and for us actually for allowing it to get in that position.”

“Charlie was put in an awful position at the time and it really was a lose-lose position in terms of that game before he left. I don’t envy him and we forgive him absolutely.”

“He’s someone that we’ve continued to keep in touch with, we care about all our players and even if they leave under those circumstances we care about them and wish them well and continue to support them. When we heard that Charlie was leaving Havant we were probably one of the first phone calls and the deal was done very quickly.”

“He loved his time here, he has a great relationship with the fans and was a player that we missed when he left, I don’t think there’s any denying that. We missed his goals and his personality both on the pitch and in the changing room. He’s someone that we were extremely keen to get back when we realised he was no longer going to stay with Havant so we are absolutely thrilled. We’re delighted to have him back and we know he is going to be a big player for us this season.”

We are delighted to welcome Charlie back to Chelmsford City and look forward to seeing him back in a Claret shirt for Pre-Season ahead of our 2023/24 Campaign!
